Occidentalism

The term Occidentalism refers primarily to the many ways in which non-Western intellectuals, artists, and the general public perceive and present the West. Though it seems to be an inversion of Orientalism, it has acquired some unique aspects defying a simple definition. The term Occidentalism is used to refer to images of 'The West' in one of two main ways: a stereotyped and sometimes dehumanizing views on the Western world, including Europe and the English-speaking world; and b, ideologies or visions of the West developed in either the West or non-West. Occidentalism, as defined by Avishai Margalit, George F. Kennan Professor in the School of Historical Studies, is a modern phenomenon, a dehumanizing picture of the West, painted not only by its enemies but in fact propagated from within.

But one can speak of Occidentalism only when the revolt against the West becomes a form of pure destruction, Occidentalism By Sally Wen Mao. A man celebrates erstwhile conquests, his book locked in a silo, still in print. I scribble Occidentalism has been in the modern age a selfdefinition as "the West," first in Europe and then in the United States, articulated through intertwined paradigms aimed at defining its presumed modern identity: reason, science, progress, universalism, individualism, masculinity, white race, adulthood.
